Why Use An Impact Traffic Door?

Double acting traffic doors allow you to speed the movement of your personnel or materials between two areas in your building by eliminating the stop, open, move through and manually close actions that a traditional single, one way swing door requires. There are no door levers or knobs to turn, the door opens easily in both directions with a hand push or when impacted by a hand truck, pallet jack or even fork lift and then automatically returns to its closed position after you have passed through the opening.

Choosing the Right Door

One type of door does not fit or work effectively in all openings. We offer a broad range of traffic door products that can easily, efficiently and cost-effectively be configured to meet your specific application. To determine the best traffic door for your application, start by doing a quick survey using the following questions as a guide:

What is the business?

Will the doors be in a supermarket, a retail store, restaurant, an industrial (manufacturing or warehouse) facility, food processing plant, institutional (healthcare or school) environment, pharmaceutical manufacturer, post office, etc.

Where will the doors be located?

From the sales floor to back room, to a kitchen or prep room, a store room, hallway, the loading dock, cooler box or freezer, manufacturing area, etc.

What is the opening size?

Is it a standard width and height or is it a special size?

What type of traffic will be going through the opening?

Will there only be pedestrians?
Will there also be carts, hand trucks, pallet jacks, motorized pallet jacks or forklifts?

How often will the doors be used during the course of a day?

Less than 10, more than 100 time a day or somewhere in-between?

Are there directional traffic patterns?

Are there sharp turns that need to be made after going through the opening in either direction?

Are there environmental considerations?

Is insulation between air conditioned or heated areas required?
Will they be used on a cooler box or freezer?
Will high moisture or humidity be present?
Will the doors be subjected to full wash-down during cleaning?

Are there aesthetic considerations?

Will you try and match a specific décor?
Will solid colors that blend into the background be acceptable?

Are there any other special requirements or certifications required?

Once you have determined your application requirements you can look for the type of door that is best suited for your application. Let’s review the most common type of traffic doors.

Impact Traffic Doors

Also known as double-acting, swing, bump, and a variety of other descriptors, the common attribute rigid impact traffic doors have is a center core of material – plywood or OSB (oriented strand board) that is covered with plastic (ABS or high pressure laminates), sheet metal (aluminum, stainless or galvanized steel) or fiberglass (FRP). For our Proline and Chase SC3000 models the door panel may have an internal metal or plastic exterior capping channel. Sheet foams (Styrene or PSC), in a combination with the core material and perimeter gasketing, is used to create insulated door panels. A single pane window is standard. Double pane windows are an option when the door will be used in a freezer or cooler box. Kick-plates (bottom quarter); impact plates (half height), spring bumpers, cart guards or rub rails and hinge guards can be added for additional durability. V-Cams, offset gravity or in-line cam hinges are all options depending upon the door model you choose.
Our Durulite products are made of roto-molded, cross-linked polyethylene plastic with an injected non-CFC urethane foam core. Featuring very high impact resistance, insulating properties and great aesthetic appeal, this type of door is designed for medium to high volume applications where pedestrian, pallet jacks or even forklift trucks are being used. An additional advantage is that the polyethylene material stands up to a variety of chemical cleaning solutions, and it’s seamless construction allows for full water wash-down without concern for core deterioration.

Flexible Doors

Usually made of extruded PVC or laminated vinyl coated nylon mesh of varying thickness, flexible doors are the simple and most cost-effective way to provide a swinging door for an opening for light to heavy traffic applications. Available in a variety of colors, these traditional doors are mounted on a simple, top-mounted gravity “hanger” hinge. Replacing a worn or torn door is as easy as removing the old material and sliding on the replacement.

Service Doors

These double-acting traffic doors weigh significantly less than their heavy duty counterparts, making them easier to open and more popular in light to medium duty applications. Also known as service or sheet doors, in some cases they are called by the name of the material used in their construction such as ABS 5000 or SRP 5000. Our SD 2000 is made from an anodized aluminum sheet stock and our XLP 5000 is a unique, hollow core roto-molded door. While these doors are primarily used for pedestrian and hand truck traffic, kick or impact plates are sometimes used for additional rigidity and durability on larger size doors. Laminates may be used on the SD 2000 to match the surrounding décor. Off set gravity and in line cam hinges are the standard for these doors.

Pass-Through Doors

Our Durulite CR1400 one-piece, roto-molded door can be used as an identical substitute or replacement for standard, interior wood, composite or metal pass-through doors. Roto-molding technology provides some advantages because it offers a corrosion resistant surface finish and full wash-down capability. The combination of the cross-linked polyethylene material with a solid urethane foam core is naturally impact resistant while providing insulating and noise dampening properties. It utilizes stainless steel hinge and lockset hardware, can be molded in a variety of colors and has window and louver options.

Strip Doors

The most basic and economical barriers to separate two spaces are overlapping strips of clear or tinted flexible plastic. The most common application for these “strip doors” is as a secondary barrier where the primary door will be left open for extended periods to facilitate work flow. Examples include cooler or freezer doors or even overhead dock doors where controlling environmental conditions such as heating, cooling or moisture will save energy and protect supplies and equipment.
